Australia's captain Set to Play a Key Part in the Ashes

Test match action

Pat Cummins has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chief selector the selector has declared that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series set to start on the 21st of November in Perth.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about his chances of participating.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations at play, not only the back issue, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a key capacity. With luck starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Injury History

The captain missed the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and stated that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the initial matches in any case. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for another day, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
