The mood at their home stadium was decidedly gloomy during the weekend fixture. The home side was losing against Torino, a side that had conceded ten goals while scoring only two in their most recent five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their latest protest in a long-running conflict with chairman Claudio Lotito.
The Campaign Coming Unstitched?
Was Lazio's season falling apart, or did there exist a binding element holding it together to start with? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as manager this summer, only for him to later acknowledge that the club had not mentioned a ban on new signings they were facing for financial irregularities. Speculation that he might quit were without basis, but he did say that Lotito had "deceived" him.
Lazio became as messy during matches as behind the scenes, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the remaining first five games, which included the capital clash. Throughout this period, it's been difficult to tell if they're getting better or collapsing.
Matteo's Unexpected Presence
At least one man remained positive amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to be at Lazio this year. He spent the last one at Parma as a loanee and, during the summer break, Lazio were pushing for him to stay there for another season. The transfer ban necessitated a reconsideration. They were unable to thin their squad with no new signings.
He signed initially during Sarri's previous tenure, back then just 20 years old product of Verona's academy. He made 20 Serie A appearances in Lazio colors in 2022-23, all but one of those from the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended after that campaign, would later accuse Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential but then not selecting him."
Finding His Best Role
Maybe Sarri was still trying to identify the nature of the player's talent. Billed as a flank player upon signing, Cancellieri nevertheless spent the majority of that term as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. During 63 outings on loan at Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
