The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.
The bans were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
